Grade 10 English Homework for April 22

"Gertrude, I tell you there's nothing more distracting than a sulky darky. Their mouths go down to here. Just ruins your day to have one of 'em in the kitchen. You know what I said to my Sophy, Gertrude? I said, 'Sophy,' I said, 'you simply are not being a Christian today. Jesus Christ never went around grumbling and complaining,' and you know, it did her good. She took her eyes off that floor and said, 'Nome, Miz Merriweather, Jesus never went around grumblin'.' I tell you, Gertrude, you never ought to let an opportunity go by to witness for the Lord." (24.43)

What is significant about this quote? When you answer that think about the following ideas:

-is there a theme revealed?
-Is there a literary device revealed?(symbol, imagery, irony etc)
-is there characterization?
-is there an element of plot here?(trigger, climax etc?)
-is there figurative language?

These are the concepts you need to analyze, and then elaborate on when asked about the significance of something in literature. Also, ask yourself why Harper Lee included this passage in the novel.

Please write one paragraph on this without use of the internet.Hand it in Monday. If you present Monday you may hand it in on Tuesday.
