Ecuador Trip!!!!

MPC is Going to Ecuador!

Monarch Park has been very privileged to partner with the organization Me to We.

For the past 7 years students from Monarch Park have been venturing outside their

comfort zone and doing the adventure of a lifetime. They have built schools in

Kenya, India and soon in Ecuador.  Ecuador is a new location that has never been

traveled to by Monarch Park students.  The goal is to help a mountain village with a

medical facility, a school, or some other form of building or aid that is most needed

at the time. The trip will begin when students fly into Quito, the highest capital in

the world.  Fully scheduled by EF ‘Education First’  Tours, our voluntour will make

it’s way to Me to We’s Minga Lodge in the Amazon.  Keep in mind that this was not

named after Monarch Park’s Minga social justice club.  The Ecuador trip has been

called a “Must do for young students” by other schools that have been on the trip

and is much closer than India.  There will be no problem with jet lag from a long

flight around the globe.  In the past students have returned more focused and

determined to shape the world around them in a positive manner and the group

going in the spring of 2015 will be no different. All these trips would not have

happened without the support of teaching and administration staff at Monarch Park.

Additionally, special thanks to Ms. Ferry and Mr. Limerick for organizing this trip.

We wish our students, some who may be traveling out of the country for the first

time, good luck and have fun helping others.  Also, look out for fundraising events

and more cool stuff coming your way.

Othello test answers

Othello Act 2 Test Answers
Part A/ Modern English
I ’m amazed you are standing in front of me(or got here ahead of me)
But my soul is overjoyed!!
My love, if the calm after the storm could always be this wonderful,
I’d want the wind to blow until it waked the dead,
Let my ship be rocked by the waves
as whipped up  as tall as mountains(or Mount Olympus)!
As high as the length from heaven to hell
If I died right now I’d be most happy,
For I fear  I’ll probably never feel as absolutely satisfied
as this again in my life.
Othello is speaking to Des. There is foreshadowing here in the last two lines, because Othello is not going to be as satisfied again….
Part B:

Part B: Short Answers       /10
(2 marks each)
1.Who says “the wine she drinks is made of grapes?” to whom? Iago to Roderigo

2.What does the line above mean in your own words?he is saying that Des is not so special. That she is but a mere human and eats and drinks like everyone else and is therefore like everyone else.

3.Name two ways that Michael Cassio is falling into Iago’s trap.
Cassio is flirting with Des.by kissing her hand in public. He also praises her too highly.

4.What is the format that Iago uses when he criticizes Emilia and all women? Describe how he does this.
Iago is bringing up praise of women only to then belittle the praise. He shows that even the best women are flawed and that all women are manipulative and good for nothing except household and wifely duties.

5.Give two adjectives that people have used to describe the Moor’s personality.
Valiant and brave

CLU 3M-Ideal Prison

Grade 11 Criminal Law Unit: Designing the Ideal Prison

Due:_____________

Group Members:____________________

In the criminal law unit, we are examining the questions:
How does the criminal justice system really work?
How well does it serve and protect Canadians?
Are we successfully rehabilitating our offenders so that they become productive members of society?

One of the pressing issues in the criminal justice system in Canada right now is prison reform, so we are going to address it here.

This table is the ‘New Vision’ for Correctional Services Canada.
Transformation of CSC: A New Vision
1.    Stronger focus on how all our efforts contribute to public safety (our primary goal)
2.    Consistency in the key fundamentals of delivering correctional services in a national organization
3.    Higher level of integration in various aspects of our work:
Particularly between the institutions and the community
4.    The parameters of professional judgment and exercising of creativity will be strengthened and clearly enunciated
5.    Issues of accountability will be clearer for everyone involved in delivering correctional services in a national organization

Assignment Criteria:
  1. You are required to investigate 2-3 foreign prison systems, in addition to the characteristics of the current Canadian penal system.
  2. Utilising the media and the Internet, you want to note information on living conditions, statistics (recidivism rates, deaths in prisons etc.), educational and rehabilitation programs offered etc in these foreign prison systems. This research will help to provide the context for designing an ideal Canadian prison. You will use the both the positive and negative aspects of these systems to help in designing ‘the ideal prison’. You should briefly touch upon this information at some point during your presentation- ie. how your knowledge of these prison systems influenced your decisions with regards to creating your prison. We will watch a few documentaries in class.

Some helpful websites to visit: John Howard Society www.johnhoward.on.ca, Amnesty International www.amnesty.org, as well as Correctional Service Canada www.csc-scc.gc.ca and the CBC: www.cbc.ca/news of course!

  1. You will work in a group of 3-4 students to complete this task. Each team will be responsible for preparing and presenting a proposal for an ideal prison. The proposal must include the architectural layout (cells, dining facilities, recreation areas, surveillance equipment, guards and staff  etc) as well as a detailed description of the programs offered (health, training, counselling, rehabilitation etc.) and the philosophy and mission statement of your correctional facility.  As a group, you can decide whether your prison will be a minimum, medium, or maximum security facility and whether it will house female or male inmates.

  1.  In your group you need to answer the following questions:

  1. How will our prison be different? Why? How will our prison help to deliver the 4 main purposes of sentencing better than our current system? What measures do we have in place to measure success? How do we know if our program choices are addressing prisoner needs? How are we incorporating CSC’s new vision?(Chapter 11)

  1. It is important for your team to ensure that both your prison’s programs and architecture receive attention.

7.For the presentation portion of this assignment, your group will act as independent consultants from various sectors of law enforcement that have been asked to submit your proposal to Correctional Services Canada in the hopes of winning the bid to reform the Canadian penal system. We will determine a class winner! You essentially need to ‘sell’ your idea to the class (CSC). You may want to consider having a logo for your prison and slogan. Creativity is an asset in this assignment. This will be done in a CAROSEL setting.

8.We should leave the presentation understanding what a day in the life of a prisoner would be in your facility. Therefore, you should have a typical daily schedule/list of responsibilities for an inmate laid out for us.

9.All ideas for prison programs should be supported by research.

LAW debate:You debate Tues/Wed.

We will be doing mini-debates next week. The debates will touch on some ideas we have looked at in class, but require research from you.

Each person must speak for one minute each.

First-you need to go home tonight and research.

Tomorrow-you must decide the key ideas your team wants to look at and then break up the major topics so that people aren't just repeating the same arguments.

There will be 6 people per debate/3 people per side. Please ensure that the first and last debaters give a brief introduction or conclusion.

I am fine if you have notes, but reading is not debating.I will go over debate style with you on Monday when you have all your research done.

The following are the resolutions up for debate. You can pick which one you care to debate.

Let it be resolved that the elderly should not have to die in prison.

Let it be resolved that euthanasia should be legalized.
