Grade 10 Essay Writing-Analysis Points

Some questions to answer to build your analysis when writing this literary and others:

-Am I summarizing the novel or showing my thoughts about the novel?

-Why does the author write the way she did?

-Does a literary device or symbol get repeated or highlighted for a reason? What is the reason?

-Ask hypothetical questions such as: What if there had been a witness to Mayella and Tom's interaction? How might that have changed things? (This type of hypothetical question is good for the conclusion.)

--Contrast and Compare: Is one character more relevant than an other, for example. Is one mother figure more nurturing, is on teacher more detrimental to Scout's learning etc.

-How is the work better understood in the era in which it was written? Or current era? How does it relate to other works by the same author or similar works?

-Why is the plot organized the way it is? What could the reason be?

Grade 10 Essay Tips

Essay Tips

Avoid introducing your ideas by stating "I think" or "in my opinion."

Keep the focus on the subject of your analysis, not on yourself. Identifying your opinions weakens them.

Always introduce the work. Do not assume that because your reader knows what you are writing about, you do not need to mention the work's title.

Other questions to consider: Is there a controversy surrounding either the work or the subject which it concerns?

What about the subject matter is of current interest?

What is the overall value of the work?

What are its strengths and weaknesses?

Support your thesis with detailed evidence from the text examined. Do not forget to document quotes and paraphrases.

Remember that the purpose of a critical analysis is not merely to inform, but also to evaluate the worth, utility, excellence, distinction, truth, validity, beauty, or goodness of something.

Even though as a writer you set the standards, you should be open-minded, well informed, and fair.
You can express your opinions, but you should also back them up with evidence.

Your essay should provide information, interpretation, and evaluation. The information will help your reader understand the nature of the work under analysis.

The interpretation will explain the meaning of the work, therefore requiring your correct understanding of it. The analysis  will discuss your opinions of the work and present valid justification for them.

Grade 10 English Homework for April 22

"Gertrude, I tell you there's nothing more distracting than a sulky darky. Their mouths go down to here. Just ruins your day to have one of 'em in the kitchen. You know what I said to my Sophy, Gertrude? I said, 'Sophy,' I said, 'you simply are not being a Christian today. Jesus Christ never went around grumbling and complaining,' and you know, it did her good. She took her eyes off that floor and said, 'Nome, Miz Merriweather, Jesus never went around grumblin'.' I tell you, Gertrude, you never ought to let an opportunity go by to witness for the Lord." (24.43)

What is significant about this quote? When you answer that think about the following ideas:

-is there a theme revealed?
-Is there a literary device revealed?(symbol, imagery, irony etc)
-is there characterization?
-is there an element of plot here?(trigger, climax etc?)
-is there figurative language?

These are the concepts you need to analyze, and then elaborate on when asked about the significance of something in literature. Also, ask yourself why Harper Lee included this passage in the novel.

Please write one paragraph on this without use of the internet.Hand it in Monday. If you present Monday you may hand it in on Tuesday.

ENG 2D7 "AFTER YOU MY DEAR ALPHONSE" RESPONSES

Alphonse and Gaston was an American comic strip by Frederick Burr Opper, featuring a bumbling pair of Frenchmen with a penchant for politeness. They first appeared in William Randolph Hearst's newspaper, the New York Journal on September 22, 1901, in a strip titled: Alphonse a la Carte and His Friend Gaston de Table d'Hote.[1]
Their "After you, Alphonse.", "No, you first, my dear Gaston!" routine entertained readers for more than a decade. Alphonse was short and grotesque; Gaston was tall and grotesque. The strip's premise was that both were extremely polite, constantly bowing and deferring to each other. Neither could ever do anything or go anywhere because each insisted on letting the other precede him.
Though never a daily or even weekly feature, Alphonse and Gaston appeared on Sundays for several years. In addition to Hearst collections and licensed products, it was adapted into a stage play and several comedy shorts.
PLEASE RESPOND BY COMMENTING.....
